While last minute writing can be a common SNL practice, making it this obvious hurts the show. He timing was so off that I seriously think he was reading the material for the first time as he was performing it. Rumsfeld Cold Opening: After a great showing in recent episodes, Hammond apparently had to phone this one in. 7 of the 13 segments in tonight’s episode ranked in the 0-1 coney range. Apparently having three weeks off between episodes does little to recharge the cast. I’m glad the Ashlee Simpsons and Colin Farrells of the world continue to treat the show with respect by generating such good press for this latest season.Īside from the re-appearance of Ferecito (last seen Snoop Dogg/Avril Lavigne 5/8/04), the sketches haven’t been this poor since the later episodes of last season. After faked shock reaction, followed by smiling approvals from Lindsay Lohan and a few Scissor Sisters members, Lorne and crew immediately went to black and ended the show slightly before the 1:00 AM mark. As if Farrell’s weak acting skills during most of the show weren’t enough to convince you, swearing during the closing credits proved just how cocky and unprofessional he really is. “I shit you not”, this has been the worst episode of Season 30 to date. In fact, musicians have been common offenders when it comes to dropping F-bombs on this show - more than half of the incidents listed below came during a musical performance. Sometimes, the slip-up has been accidental, such as when Jenny Slate dropped the F-bomb on her very first episode as an SNL cast member. Since SNL debuted in 1975, the late-night sketch comedy/variety show has had multiple incidents where some variation of the F-word has been dropped, with the first known time coming back in 1980. As the history of Saturday Night Live proves, sometimes the person dropping the expletive is let off the hook, while other times the accidental or deliberate slip of the tongue costs the person their job. The consequences of an obscenity airing on live television can vary. And when that slip of the tongue results in an F-bomb or other obscenity being heard on-air, it tends to be a very big deal - the audience notices, the media notices, and the FCC notices. Without the cushion of tape delay, whatever someone says on-mic (and sometimes off-mic) will end up being aired. One of the hazards of live television is that it is just that - live.
